NKT, Boskalis Land Ostwind 2 Export Cable Project

A consortium comprising Boskalis Subsea Cables and Flexibles and NKT has been awarded a contract by 50 Hertz for the Ostwind 2 offshore wind farm grid connection in Germany.

The contract comprises supply and installation of approximately 270 kilometers of 220 kV high-voltage AC XLPE offshore export cable system, and approximately 8 kilometers of 220 kV high-voltage AC XLPE onshore cable system.

NKT contract for the supply of the cables carries a value of some €300 million, while Boskalis will receive in excess of €250 million for the installation part, making this the largest export cable project for both companies.

The export cable system for Ostwind 2 will be manufactured both in Karlskrona, Sweden, and in Cologne, Germany, with production start beginning of 2020.

For this project Boskalis will deliver an integrated solution of in-house services including supporting UXO survey, geotechnical and geophysical surveys (through Boskalis subsidiary Gardline), seabed preparation works, pre-lay run, transport and installation of the 220kV export cables and seabed reinstatement.

The wind farms connected via the Ostwind 2 grid connection, which is expected to be fully commissioned in end-2022, will be located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of the German Island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea.
