NKT Gets Power Cables Order for Viking Link

NKT has secured a contract worth approximately EUR 90 million from Energinet and National Grid, the owners of Viking Link interconnector project, between Denmark and Britain.

The contract will see NKT supply approximately 150 km of 525 kV MI high-voltage DC onshore power cables for the Viking Link interconnector project, connecting the Danish and British transmission grids.

The Viking Links has an overall length of 760 kilometers, consisting of offshore and onshore cables.

The power cable system, not comprising civil works, delivered by NKT constitutes the around 75 km connection of the project from Danish shore to the power grid substation in Revsing, southern Jutland.

NKT interim CEO Roland M. Andersen said: “I am pleased that we are selected as power cables supplier to Viking Link, which is a key project for the North-European transformation towards renewable energy supplies. The award is a recognition of our technological competences also in the growing extra high-voltage interconnector segment from Energinet and National Grid.”

The NKT power cables will be manufactured in Karlskrona, Sweden, with production start expected in 2020.

When completed, Viking Link will be a 760 km long DC interconnector line between Revsing in southern Jutland, Denmark and Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, UK. Being able to balance wind production and demand across countries and closer integration between transmission grids is important for the efficient transition towards a green energy future. Implementation of Viking Link is a vital step towards achieving ambitious renewable targets in both Denmark and the UK.

The interconnector line is expected to be fully commissioned in 2023.
