Energy Voice | VIDEO: Explosives used to blow up oil rigs

It’s not the type of “decommissioning” work normally seen, but a video has emerged online of parts of old oil platforms being blown up with explosives.

With a “fire in the hole”, the footage on YouTube shows parts of two fixed platforms being blown up with the use of C4 – a type of plastic explosive.

The activity is taking place in the Gulf of Mexico – off the coast of the US state of Louisiana.

Despite the explosions sending water and debris metres in the air, the structures appear to still be standing towards the end of the video.

It was uploaded by a user named “Fish Hunter” to the site.
