A bright blue light lit up the New York skyline on Thursday night after a transformer exploded at an energy facility.
The bright light caused a stir on social media with images posted to Twitter.
Police said the explosion at the Con Edison facility in Queens led to a fire which is now under control.
No injuries have been reported.
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s spokesman Eric Phillips tweeted that the lights were attributable to a “blown transformer” at the Queens facility.
He said there are scattered power outages, including at LaGuardia Airport.
